Performance Optimization - Phase 7d Lighthouse Strategy

This document outlines the performance optimization strategy for Phase 7d, including Core Web Vitals improvements, Lighthouse audit procedures, and performance monitoring.


April 2026 Updates

The following optimizations were shipped in PR #150 (perf/speed-and-responsiveness):

  • Resource hints in index.html: <link rel="preconnect"> to Firestore and Identity Toolkit; <link rel="dns-prefetch"> to Cloud Functions and Firebase Storage.
  • Self-hosted IBM Plex Mono: Migrated from Google Fonts CDN to @fontsource/ibm-plex-mono (weights 400/500/600). Vite emits woff2 into dist/assets at build time. No CDN round-trip.
  • font-display: swap on all @font-face: Added to Goldman, Turret Road, Amazon Ember, and Bookerly typefaces in src/index.css to prevent FOIT.
  • FrameworkRadar lazy-loaded: React.lazy() + Suspense in FrameworkDetailTemplate and FrameworkReviewBoard. Defers the vendor-charts chunk (~159KB) so it only loads when a user navigates to a framework detail page.
  • Ghost deps removed: @monaco-editor/react (never imported in src/) and rss-parser (functions-only) removed from root bundle.
  • Lighthouse URL coverage expanded: From 5 to 9 routes in .lighthouserc.json.

Current Lighthouse Gate (.lighthouserc.json)

The lighthouse:recommended preset was replaced with category-only thresholds because the preset enforces 50+ individual audits at ≥90% and the current app fails on unoptimized images, missing meta-descriptions, and console errors from the Firebase SDK.

Lighthouse Decoupled from Deploy

Lighthouse was removed from deploy-frontend.yml in April 2026. It was causing 20-minute deploy times (27 scans: 3 runs × 9 URLs). It now runs only on PRs and on-demand via check-lighthouse.yml with numberOfRuns: 1, taking ~7-10 minutes.

Core Web Vitals

Core Web Vitals are Google's critical metrics for page experience. Phase 7d optimizations directly impact these metrics.

1. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)

Definition: Time until the largest visible content element renders.

Target: ≤ 2.5 seconds (Good)

Manual Testing: Lighthouse Audit

Procedure:

1. Open page in Chrome browser
2. Press F12 to open DevTools
3. Click Lighthouse tab (or use menu → More tools → Lighthouse)
4. Select "Mobile" or "Desktop"
5. Click "Generate report"
6. Review results:
   - Performance score (target: 90+)
   - Opportunities (specific improvements suggested)
   - Diagnostics (informational metrics)

Expected: Performance 90+/100, Accessibility 90+/100

Appendix: Performance Testing Checklist
